Meet Richmond’s Boutique Custom Home Builder
Southern Traditions Homes was founded by Robert and Megan Carter with a simple focus: build exceptional homes to fit our customers’ needs while making the process enjoyable. With a background in building construction and decades of experience spanning design, planning, and hands-on jobsite management, Robert stays closely involved throughout every build. By keeping the number of projects intentionally manageable, our team is able to deliver higher attention to detail, clear communication, and craftsmanship that shows in every space of the finished home.
Our Approach
Our approach is personal by design. We take on a limited number of homes at a time so every client gets consistent access, clear answers, and steady guidance from planning through completion. You’ll work closely with our team to shape the layout, refine the details, and make key selections, with practical input that keeps your vision intact and the process moving smoothly. We stay present on the jobsite and actively involved in the day-to-day progress of your home, coordinating trusted trades, protecting quality at every stage, and making sure the experience feels like a true partnership, not a handoff.

Our Story
Founded in 2003 by Robert and Megan Carter, Southern Traditions Homes continues to produce custom homes that meet or exceed the needs and expectations of our customers. Robert brings over 30 years of hand on construction experience to the table, and is involved throughout the entire process of every new home built by Southern Traditions. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction from Virginia Tech, Robert spent 10 years working for one of the nation’s largest builders and learned the business side of construction, as well as the field management aspects of homebuilding and what makes it enjoyable and successful. His experience includes all aspects of residential homebuilding – from plan design elements, to construction and building methodology, to purchasing and control measures, to project management, Robert stays actively involved throughout the entire process.
Rob’s wife, Megan, handles the administrative aspects of the company. She coordinates the construction loans and draw payments with our customers and lenders, applies for and tracks the building permits with the surrounding counties, processes payments for our vendors and contractors, keeps up with change orders on each job, and anything else required to keep the business operating smoothly.
Trent Sherman joined Southern Traditions in 2009 as Sales and Marketing director. With over 30 years experience in front end coordination and management including sales and contract procedures, design and implementation of marketing and advertising material, and plan development and design, Trent works with our customers from their initial introduction with Southern Traditions, through the development of home designs and specifications for each home, and gets all of our construction agreements in place.
Inger Stahr came on board in 2025 as our new customer selections coordinator, replacing Elaine Reeder who retired after almost 20 years with Southern Traditions. Inger helps all of our customers with their selections processes on items such as cabinetry, appliances, plumbing and electrical fixtures, and flooring. She helps keep things running smooth with the vendor appointments and selections, and helps our customers stay within budgets as they navigate through the many options available along the way.
Mark Rennick is our Project Manager and helps oversee the daily goings on for each job site. Mark spent many years in the construction industry as a deck specialist, and also built several homes himself. He helps Rob with the daily scheduling and oversight of the sub-contractors and makes sure they have what they need to complete their tasks. Mark also meets with the customers on site during the construction process, answering any questions you may have in the field.
Jeremy Hise is the warranty manager and punch list specialist for Southern Traditions. Jeremy is involved with all of our projects from the start, especially towards the end as we are wrapping things up. He will take care of many of the final “touch up” items needed finish up a home. He also helps our customers after move-in with any warranty related items needing to be addressed.
